We’re excited for the first NYC BigApps Hackathon this weekend! The Hackathon will help NYC BigApps 3.0 participants jumpstart their entries for the competition, which challenges developers to create valuable, free apps using open NYC government data. Developers will have the chance to explore NYC Open Data, find teammates, talk to representatives from companies providing APIs, build something amazing to help NYC, and compete for $2,500 in prizes for the best hacks!
Hackathon schedule:
Kickoff Event at Pivotal Labs: Friday, Nov. 11, 7-9 PM
Hacking at Pivotal Labs: Saturday, Nov. 12 from 10 AM to Sunday, Nov. 13 at 1 PM (all night long!)
Presentations, Judging, Prizes: Sunday, Nov. 13 at 2:30 PM
Like NYC BigApps submissions, hacks must use data from NYC Open Data and will be judged on the quality of the idea, implementation, and potential impact.
We’ve got a great lineup of judges as well representing startups, accelerators, venture firms, the City and other players in the NY tech scene:
Amish Jani – Founder and Managing Director, FirstMark Capital
Chris Wiggins – Co-founder, HackNY and Associate Professor, Columbia University
Josh Knowles – Managing Director, Pivotal Labs (New York Office)
Kellan Elliott-McCrea – CTO, Etsy
Ulrich Quay – Vice-President, BMW iVentures
Carole Post – Commissioner, NYC Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications (DoITT)
Kristy Sundjaja – Senior Director and Head of Industry Transformation Dept., NYCEDC
Rachel Sterne – Chief Digital Officer, City of New York
Plus, several API partners will be attending, including: Yipit, Tumblr, DonorsChoose, Etsy, NY Times, Meetup, 8coupons, CartoDB, Magma, RecordSetter, GetGlue, StreetEasy, and Zemanta.
We look forward to seeing you there!

NYC OpenData

New York City has opened up hundreds of datasets through NYC OpenData.

We are happy to have so many datasets, maps, and documents online, but we know that it can be overwhelming. That’s why we’ve created this Tumblr: to showcase datasets that New Yorkers will find interesting, compelling and thought-provoking.

Have a visualization you'd like to share? Upload it here!
